For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

We’re Built for This!

Christology in Laymen’s Terms:

Jesus is uniquely built for the job of being our Savior!

“He Fixed It for Me”

Ontological Christology (His natures), Functional Christology (His works)

For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,

but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.

So far in this series, we have looked at the aspects within Christology of ontological Christology (the being / natures of Christ) and functional Christology (the works of Christ).
Today, we want to touch on the final aspect of Christology, which is referred to as Soteriological Christology (what Jesus has done to accomplish our salvation)

Soteriological Christology

In dealing with humanity, the Godhead has to always perfectly balance every aspect of His character.

The justice and holiness of God would not allow Him to overlook sin.
Yet, His love and mercy would not allow Him to be indifferent to sinners.

“Divine love triumphed over divine wrath by divine sacrifice.” - John R. Stott

He is our Propitiation (v18)
(NLT)

For you know that you were redeemed from your empty way of life inherited from the fathers, not with perishable things like silver or gold,

Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.

Get rid of the old “yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.

He is our Price
Vicarious
We are Redeemed
We are Reconciled

Because He is both God and human, and because of His acceptance of His mission to bring heaven’s resources for earth’s problems, He ultimately had to serve as the perfect substitutionary sacrifice for our sins.

Our sin was Removed
Thesis:

Jesus is uniquely built to be our substitutionary sacrifice for sin

Victorious

He is our Passover Lamb (v19)

but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish.

Sinless, He died for our sinfulness

Was to have no blemish, faults, or diseases (; Pet. 1:19)

Sacrificially, He took our spots

Sacrificed (Exod. 12:3)

Substitute for the family (Exod. 12:3)

Blood was shed (Exod. 12:7)

(NLT)

Lamb’s blood allowed God to extend mercy ()

Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.

Which is why Jesus used the Passover meal to introduce the New Covenant

Jesus had already proclaimed that He is the Bread of life ()
Mark 14:22

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

So, near the end of the meal (“as they were eating”), He took the middle matzah (Afikomen)
Jesus had already proclaimed that He is the Bread of life ()

It is made without yeast (or corruption, sign of sin)

(CSV)

He did not commit sin,

and no deceit was found in His mouth;

It is pierced

(CSV)

But He was pierced because of our transgressions,

It is striped

(NKJV)
And by His stripes we are healed.

The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,

And by His stripes we are healed.

It is broken

(NKJV)

“Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you;

He did not commit sin,

and no deceit was found in His mouth; s

He said that this bread represented His body:

Uncorrupted by sin, yet pierced, beaten, bruised, and broken ON OUR BEHALF

He did this for us!

ILLUS: When Do I Die?
(NKJV)

Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

Jesus took the 3rd cup of the Passover wine, drunk after the Passover lamb meal had been eaten (“after supper”)

This 3rd cup is known as the Cup of Redemption

nown as the Cup of Redemption, and used it to say
(NLT)

for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.

This is My blood

without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin
the life is in the blood

He gave up His body to satisfy the penalty for sin, the wrath of God.

But with His blood, He sealed and confirmed our covenant with God.

But, His blood sealed and confirmed our covenant with God.

With Jesus as our Passover lamb, His substitutionary death fixed our past, but also fixed whatever may come in the future!

The blood of the 1st Passover lamb protected God’s people from a plague that took lives.

The blood of OUR Passover lamb not only protects,

it heals,

it frees,

it redeems,

it cleanses,

it saves,

it forgives,

it makes whole,

it delivers,

it restores,

it STILL works!
